Pulmonary hypertension, or PH, is a simplified name for a complex health problem: high blood pressure in the lungs which produces progressive breathlessness and ultimately threatens a patient’s life. It affects people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. It is a debilitating, life-threatening illness currently without a cure. In 1987, there were less than 200 diagnosed cases of PH in the United States and no disease-specific treatment. Worldwide it is estimated that there are now hundreds of thousands of cases. Research is leading to a greater understanding of the illness and promising treatments.
